Turquoise: December’s Birthstone and 11th Anniversary Gemstone
Turquoise, with its captivating blue-green hue, is the traditional birthstone for December, alongside zircon and tanzanite. It is also the gemstone associated with the 11th wedding anniversary.
The name turquoise dates back to the 17th century and comes from the French word for “Turkish,” as the gemstone was first brought to Europe via Turkey. A soft and distinctive gem, turquoise boasts a maximum MOHS hardness of just under 6, making it slightly harder than window glass.
Turquoise is formed over millions of years when water rich in minerals like copper and aluminum seeps into iron-rich limonite or sandstone. The copper in the stone gives turquoise its beautiful blue tones, while aluminum adds a greenish tint. The natural matrix in turquoise can include vein-like markings from the host rock, with brown or tan hues depending on the mineral content.
Known for its stunning color and unique markings, turquoise has been cherished by cultures throughout history for its healing and protective properties. Whether given as a birthday gift, an anniversary present, or simply as a token of appreciation, turquoise remains a timeless symbol of vitality, protection, and natural beauty.
